These couple of drawings where my own experiments at drawing ‘mermaid like’ creatures, one of them isn’t finished yet and needs a lot more work, the other is just a sketch. I hope you like my ladies.
Little Princess
One of my favourite book’s as a child (and now), was the ‘Little Princess’, I also loved the film and I still watch it when I’m ill, that and The Secret Garden…anyway, Sara in the Little Princess appealed to me so much when I was young, because she was so full of imagination and stories.
At uni, I was asked to create an altered book for one of our projects. I had recently been to an old second hand book shop with my friend and found an old copy of the Little Princess, it was a battered and torn paper back, so I immediately thought of using that book. Destroying, bending or tearing books is like blasfamie to me what ever state it’s in though, so I found it hard at first.
When I eventually came up with my idea however, I really enjoyed it. My plan was to pull out some pages and cut key characters, events or objects out of the pages and hang them from the book, as if they where falling from the pages. The book was to be hung up like a mobile and the end result looked pretty cool. I hung it on a coat hanger to show it at uni, and after chatting to everyone, decided to keep the coat hanger and cover it in pages from the book too, as I was told that my out come looks kind of like a dress, with the shape of it and the way it falls, like a kids party dress or princess dress. I want to hang bells on it too, so when it moves in the breeze it makes noises, like a child’s mobile…these are a few photos, some of them are a bit rubbish so I apologise.
